2016 Jamsheed Beechworth Roussanne
Handpicked from the Warner Vineyard in Beechworth, three hours north of Melbourne. The vineyard is situated in the foothills of the Alpine Valley of Victoria and is composed of granitic-loam over clay and areas of slate and shale. The Roussanne is handpicked, whole bunch pressed and racked with full solids into older 800 and 500 litre French oak, fermented with indigenous yeasts and left sur lees for 8 months.
As a varietal Roussanne is often accused of being flabby and a bit fat around the edges and I'd say that's fair for a lot of the cheap, high-yield, inorganic plonk that goes into white Rhône blends... but this is nothing like it! A true fine wine, expect toothsome minerality, vibrant rich-ripe lemon-lime citrus with beautiful texture, weight and length. There's aspects in this wine that draw from both the Mosel and Burgundy, but in all fairness they're more akin to Jamsheed and their Roussanne than anything else... I've seen the same defining features in the last 3 vintages of this wine!
